Typical Air Duct Cleaning

The very first thing that happens after pulling up into your driveway in the box van is one person hops out and goes inside the house to locate where all of the vents are throughout the house, while he does that the other person works his way into the garage or wherever the furnace is located.

After the person has looked around the house and has found every vent, he will then take plastic mats and he will put them on top of every vent  (he will do this to get good suction) the better the suction is, the more junk you will get out of your vents. Now the guy working on the furnace will need to cut a ten inch hole into the furnace, then he will turn off the pilot light and he will find the breaker and shut off the power going to the furnace so the house doesn’t burn down.

Depending on the layout of the house, he will take sponges and block off the holes in the furnace that lead to different areas of the house (this way you can get excellent suction in the part of the house you are working in).

At this point it is time to turn on the big vacuum and air compressor that are located in the truck. Now he will put the big vacuum hose into the ten inch hole in the furnace. Finally it is time to go back into the truck and get the Air Hose along with all of the Air Whips. Now both of the workers need to stretch the Air Hose all the way to the vent that is furthest away from the furnace (they do it this way so they don’t need to back track all of the dirt or whatever is in the ducts!) .

Now they will take the Air Whip and start leading it all the way down into the vent, they will stop the whip once they hear it hit the trunk line (If you don’t hear it hit the trunk line, then that means it didnt go all the way down!).

Once they have made sure they have done a thorough cleaning with the vents, they now move their equipment down to the crawl space or wherever the Trunk Line is located. They now take a drill and drill a hole in each section of the Trunk Line, and now they take the Air Hose and the Whip and feed it down the Trunk line going into the furnace, they go up and down the line several times to make sure they have gotten everything loose.

After they have patched up all of the holes they have made in the Trunk Line ,they now  move onto the Intake section of the furnace. To clean the Intake they will need to spot out where all the vents are through the house! (Some of the vents may be on the ceiling, so be sure to check everywhere!). Once they have found the vents to the Intake, they need to take a drill and take the screws out (It is also nice to have some carpet cutters just in case the paint is stuck the the vent cover!).

So after that it’s time to take the Whip and the Air Hose and feed it all the way down the vent several times so you don’t miss anything!. Once all of the Intakes have been thoroughly cleaned out, now they will put the covers back on all of the vents. By this time all of the ducts should all be clean! Now it is time to go back to the furnace to clean all of the junk out.

A common way to clean out the furnace is to have one person down underneath in the crawl space and the other person up in the garage with a Shop Vac handing down the hose to the person underneath, now he can easily vacuum up all of the garbage that was in your ducts. After the main furnace part is cleaned out it is time to clean out the Intake section. To Do that the person doing the furnace work will drill another hole in the furnace(this area is called the plenum).

After the hole is drilled then the he will insert the big vacuum hose into the hole with the Whips along with some sponges to hold all of it into place. Finally everything should be very clean at this time. Now it is time to take a twelve by twelve sheet of metal to patch up the big holes. After the holes are all patched up, they now detach the vacuum hose and take all of the Whips and put them back into the box van, they then scan the house to make sure they didn’t miss anything.

Now everything is done  and you have very clean ducts. Now  you don’t need to worry about wondering what is in your ducts or what you are breathing in because now all of that trash is safe in the back of the truck. It is a long process but it is well worth the money and time!
